I was SO excited to read this book. I grew-up playing outside (camping, hiking, swimming, snowshoeing, etc) and currently live in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Our son is 2 and playing outside -letting him be wild and free- is a priority. Sadly, this was less about the simple importance and benefits of fresh air and outside play (year around, regardless of the weather), and all about this author's apparent disdain for us lowly Americans. One example (of many) was when she was ticketed for allowing her children to swim in an unauthorized are of a nature preserve (because of health hazards and the risk of e.coli infection due to manure from an upstream farm). Here's how the author summarizes her victimization: "Over the next few weeks, I went through something akin to a mourning process. At first, there was denial. How could this possibly happen to me? After all, I was known as the town's local environmentalist and resident health nut, who had helped start a farmer's market, organized litter pickups, promoted recycling, and done Eart Day presentations at the elementary school...My "crunchy"-parenting credentials were solid. Yet now I stood accused of the bizarre crime of harming nature by letting my children wade in an agricultural cesspool....Then came anger."The author goes on for pages about this perceived wrong. So instead of being a source of open-minded encouragement and guidance for parents that maybe haven't been raised outside, but are looking to change that for their children - this is more of a vanity piece. A "look how great I am" book. All 255 pages. So disappointing. So snooty. A term rhyming with "smouche tag" comes to mind. Save your money - just go play outside with your sweet, precious and wild babies - do it as often as you can and that's about it.

I just wanted to thank Linda McGurk for writing this book, There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather. I have subscribed to her newsletter for quite a while, so when I found that she was writing a book I pre-ordered it and read it quite quickly. I have recommended it to so many people I can’t even count – literally -- because I was at a conference of early childhood educators when I announced how wonderful the book was and that everyone should run out and buy it. Three of my adult children already bought their own copy.I have been in early childhood education since 1975, but only since 2009, when I read Richard Louv’s book (Last Child in the Woods), have I been on a campaign to get kids into nature. I have worked for Head Start programs since 1977 and for the past 10 years or so have been a trainer for them. I’m trying to get programs to replace their plastic playgrounds with a hill, grass, rocks, trees, bushes – anything more natural than rubber or plastic, but state regulations often prevent much creativity in playgrounds, regardless of what research and one's common sense dictates.I so appreciated all the work you went to researching articles for this book. Most of them I had read, but Ms. McGurk added significantly to my library, and the research continues to mount and show the value of getting outside and playing in some good gooey dirt/mud/sand/ etc.May I also say that the writing was superb. I was not expecting to see such a broad vocabulary, eloquent and readable text, knowing that English is not her first language. This book is an important contribution to the growing list of voices calling for sanity and sense in the ways we deal with Mother Nature. I give it the highest endorsement, as one who has spent more than 40 years working with and in behalf of young children.

I have always loved the outdoors, but often American culture has a way of limiting our interactions with nature and I myself was guilty of assimilating into that mindset. I would say things like, "I wish it was warm enough to go outside." in the winter, and didn't invest in adequate outdoor gear for all kinds of weather for my son and I. We had resigned ourselves to staying indoors when it wasn't what we deemed ideal weather, and it wasn't until I met Linda that I started changing my attitude."There is no such thing as bad weather. Only inappropriate clothing." This was something I had heard before, but it wasn't until I saw it being lived through Linda's example that I was really able to grasp it's meaning and fully adapt that lifestyle myself. The thing I like most about this book is that it is relatable. Linda does not pretend to be the perfect parent, or romanticize the idea that playing outside is always this glorious, harmonious activity. In fact she often shares examples in her book like her daughters complaining about having to go outside, or meltdowns during cross country skiing, and her struggles to pull them away from the ever luring electronic screens. This is what I love about this book. Making your kids go outside is not always easy. There will be resistance. There will be obstacles. But in the end it is worth it. Linda equips her readers with the tools and advice necessary to adapt to an outdoor parenting lifestyle. I know I personally have been truly impacted by this philosophy I no longer feel trapped indoors during the cold months of winter because now have the mentality to embrace all kinds of weather. I highly recommend this book for all parents looking for ways they can find a deeper connection with their children and with nature.

Listening to this as my toddler and I stroll through snowflakes en route to the local coffeehouse is exactly the entertainment I need to keep us out and about when most people are looking at us like we must've escaped an insane asylum.

This is absolutely necessary in today's manic-controlling-screen driven-activity planning parenthood race. A breath of fresh air that definitely makes me want to move to Sweden, or at the very least look in depth at state laws on parks and education!!! Bravo Linda!

I'll Gather My Geese, by Hallie Crawford Stillwell

From Publishers Weekly

She was brought up to be a proper Southern lady, but fate put her in a place where she needed other qualities. At 19, Hallie Crawford left home in Waco, Tex., to teach in a rural school on the Mexican border. Two years later, in 1918, she married Roy Stillwell and moved to his remote cattle ranch in the West Texas Big Bend country. Roy had three cowhands, and the author soon became the fourth. The town-bred young woman became an expert at working cattle on horseback; she learned to manage horses and to protect herself from wild animals (she once shot a mountain lion between the eyes). Now a doughty 94-year-old, Stillwell details the challenges of ranch life, explaining how she and her family, including three children, survived illnesses, drought and the Depression. Her story will strongly appeal to readers interested in the early West. Photos. Copyright 1991 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

YA-- Born in 1879, Stillwell was destined to help tame the last frontier of Texas known as the Big Bend Country. She records this story in some 20 vignettes, beginning with her marriage in 1918. She recounts how she learns to cope with a strong, respectful but often silent husband, the physical demands of a developing ranch, and the strong love that grew to encompass the ranch family. In a simple manner she paints her word pictures, illustrating the indispensable roles of the frontier woman as bride, companion, helpmate, and mother. The photographs of the family interspersed throughout provide a visual picture. This is a readable book that will help YAs develop an appreciation for the demands of such a lifestyle. Here also is a woman worthy of admiration for her determination, sacrifices, and contributions. A wonderful book for American history classes, women's studies, and family history seminars. --Dolores M. Steinhauer, Thomas Jefferson Sci-Tech, Fairfax County, VACopyright 1992 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Living in Texas nearly all my life, I heard of Hallie Stillwell the journalist and newspaperwoman. Reading of her years in the wilds of South Texas gave me a new appreciation of her life. She grew up in an era when few women put on pants and worked like men, but that is what was required once she married and began living on the Stillwell ranch instead of at their house in town. As with other ranchers, she struggled with economic effects of the Depression and years of drought. Illness, physical injuries, and death took their toll as well on her, her family and friends. In each instance, she "gathered" her geese and pushed to make the best of each hardship. Through the years, the ranch hands became like family as did many of the neighbors. She was wise beyond her years in knowing when to keep her mouth shut in situations where the men had the advantage of experience and explained little, expecting her to gain experience from watching them or by observing situations. Ofter her feelings and self-esteem took a hard blow, and she could only separate the wheat from the chaff after she spent time mulling things on her favorite rock out back of the ranch house. No wonder she has always been so highly though of.

I had seen Hallie Stillwell on the 1980s video about the Marfa Lights when my husband and I were doing research for our book, Mysteries of the Marfa Lights Revealed (available on Amazon). In doing the research for the introductory chapters, I'd developed an admiration for the people who opened up the west. There were the men of the Army who WALKED, yes, WALKEd from Fort Stockton to the Big Bend and elsewhere in this region of Texas. And there were the pioneering families who settled this remote area. The Stillwells were among those pioneering families. So when I saw Hallie Stillwell's book, I HAD to read it. Hallie Stillwell's story is as captivating as a novel. I found myself crying when her father and her husband, Roy, died. But most of all my heart was filled with admiration for the woman Hallie Crawford Stillwell was. Her characteristics are those I saw in my maternal grandmother who emigrated from the Ukraine. They are the characteristics of my paternal grandmother who with her children drove from Wisconsin to Montana in a Model T Ford -- alone but with a gun. Hallie Stillwell is a woman with character, strength, and perseverance. She was the epitome of "pick yourself up; dust yourself off; and start all over again." This all comes across in the way she writes of her life. Her style isn't boastful. If anything she's too hard on herself. She tells her story as she saw it -- and how things affected her. It's very personal, very thoughtful, and magnificently written. I wish I'd known Hallie Stillwell!

If you are interested in the way people lived and thrived in the early 1900s, this is a great book. I am a big fan of Big Bend and it was fun to read about those small towns I hold dear.

This book is a delightful look through a window into the recent past pioneer days. Haley Crawford Stillwell gives credence to the saying, "Marry a Texas woman because when the going gets tough, they're tougher." This is a well written, interesting and touching book.

This was a great book...well written...makes one appreciate the hard times these pioneer people had. My gratitude and respect to all of them...

It is a great first hand account of life in the early 1900's on a ranch in far West Texas. An amazing woman and an even amazing woman. A must read for Texans.

A good read (especially if you know the area where she lived) and an accurate account of the days of the 20s, 30s, and 40s as a cowboy's wife. Her matter of fact approach to a really hard life is hard to imagine 100 years later. Hallie didn't have things we certainly take for granted now. No whiners allowed!!

excellent read. Grab the entire series.

I have been a real fan of action western stories for more than 30 years and my favorite western writer is Louis L’Amour. I have read a great number of his books over the years but I had not read this particular collection (The collected short stories of Louis L’Amour Volume 3 Frontier stories, 560 pages) and when I saw it on Amazon for a bargain price I purchased it.This collection has 28 short stories and I really enjoyed reading these action packed stories which were interesting and enjoyable. If you are into western stories you should check out this volume 3 collection. Louis L’Amour is truly the master of writing realistic and page turning western stories.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Training alone in Combatives and Self-Defense)

I purchased this book for my husband. He has read the majority of western in excistance and loves Louis L'Amour. He says he enjoys these because he can sit down and read every evening and have a reason to stop at a reasonable hour. If you are a avid reader you understand that once you start a good book you just can't stop reading until the end. With these he reads a few short stories and calls it good. He has started paraphrasing the stories to our sons 4 and 6 and they are also enjoying these books. He says it is almost always the same story line, but the details are what makes it so interesting.

I like the short stories. Every one is difficult to put down. You can't go wrong with this book. It can easily be read more than once.

There are not enough words to express the genius of Louis L'Amour. He is just the best and I've rest all the books and most of the short stories.

These books are very attractively bound with the paper outer cover for extra protection. Wonderful gift for fans of this author.

I love that I can pick out one of his short stories and by the second line we are into the story. Never wastes our time!

Bought this book as well as several other short stories collections of Louis L’Amour for my husband for Christmas. They all arrived in a timely manner and before Christmas. Books were used but in great condition. Very pleased with this purchase and my Husband was thrilled, as he is a big Louis L’Amour fan.

Great read as with any L'AMOUR novel.

I ordered this book for senior quote ideas. The only "issue" I had was that there was a large crease in the cover of the book, as well as small written initials on the front. When I purchased the book, the condition did not say new, so I knew what I was getting! Great seller, and super-fast delivery.

I LOVE this book! I want everyone to read it, including Congress; I want to go out with my own box and get suggestions; I want to move to NY and join Illegal Art; I want to hear a suggestion from every single person in America. This book is the basis of democracy - everyone has a chance to speak, even the person who crossed out what s/he said and then put it in the box anyway. The Wall St. section is not given more play than the subway ride to Yankee Stadium. Wealthy white males are not over-represented. People say absolutely ridiculous things, and profound, moving things, and idiotic things. There's a feeling of truth in the book that is enormously powerful for me. Maybe because contributors were allowed their anonymity. But in seeing their handwriting (suggestions were reproduced directly, not transcribed), and what they say, I got such a feeling of humanity! It made me happy to be an American, which very few things do these days. Suggestion somehow gets under all the hype and dross and grandstanding and gives us a taste of ordinary freedom. I think this book can change the world.

This book leaks out pure amazingness. The editors spared no one's beliefs, thoughts, or feelings while compiling this book-- and that's a good thing. Along with the funny things (i.e. "I suggest you give me the box"), there's whimsical advice, heartfelt thoughts, religious and political suggestions or observations, and truly thought provoking statements. This book gives you a glimpse into the minds of strangers, and, no pun intended, pulls you out of your own box. It opens your mind to things you might not have ever even considered. It's thoroughly enjoyable to read, and doesn't take long, so why not give it a try?

I'm a huge fan of art projects that encourage public interaction, and especially of works that use words - so I think this is great. The book is a thought provoking read - you get to see what other people are thinking; you get to think about if you agree; and you get to think about the suggestions you'd like to make. Good job Illegal Art folks... Bravo!

This book is a great collection of what those around you might be thinking at the time.If you were sitting on the subway and could put a bubble with one sentance over everyone's head representing what they were thinking or feeling, this is what you'd come up with. The guy next to you might be saying "beer flavored nipples" and the woman across from you suggesting "Dave should stop wasting my precious time" Humorous, thoughtprovoking and entertaining, this collection of suggestions, thoughts and opinions of your fellow humans walking by you on the street and sitting next to you on the subway is worth the read and a fun experience.

Very few art books make you open your mind and think like this one does; yes there are some expected suggestions but there are also some really weird no-one-person-could-make-this-stuff-up suggestions. There is a breadth, scope, emotion and imagination that couldn't come from fiction or conventional art. It really makes you think, laugh and wonder. A truly inspiring book, that is really good for angry New Yorkers, but I think the ideas will resonate wherever you are in the world.

Oh, how this brought back my wonderful impressions of New York and New Yorkers. I bought several copies for gifts to send to my old NY friends and neighbors. They all need a good bit of cheer!

Thank you Illegal Art for giving voice to the people of New York City and beyond. The Suggestion Box is not only a mobile polling machine thatsamples peoples views, it is a monitor for the state of various urban conditions.Keep it Public.Malachi Connolly

Cora Frear, by Susan E. Goodman

From Publishers Weekly

Launching the Brave Kids chapter book series, this morsel of historical fiction springs from a memoir by Cora Frear, born in 1887 and raised on the Iowa prairie. The tale opens as Cora's father, a doctor, invites her to accompany him on a buggy ride to visit an ailing patient. Cora, who often acts as her father's assistant, eagerly accepts. After spying dark clouds and a red glow in the sky behind them, Cora realizes that a prairie fire is heading their way. Her father decides to set a backfire he will sear a patch of grass that, reduced to ash, will serve as a "blessed island of safety" when the prairie fire approaches. The doctor's single match fails to ignite, but Cora manages to find one last remaining match in her father's cast-off vest pocket. The scene is set for high drama, but Goodman's (Animal Rescue) bland prose doesn't do justice to the duo's peril or anguish: "The fire was burning around them. The temperature was almost unbearable. The heat seemed to last forever." An afterword amplifies the historical setting. Illustrations not seen by PW. Ages 6-9. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3-This brief story is based on actual events in the life of a girl who grew up in late-19th-century Iowa. When the 10-year-old and her doctor father are caught in a prairie fire on their way to treat a sick baby, their energy and resourcefulness save their lives. An afterword tells about the real Cora Frear Hawkins and provides background regarding women's roles. Goodman's straightforward style calls to mind the work of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and provides the action that beginning chapter-book readers require. The short format perfectly fits this depiction of an episode out of history. Ettlinger's black-and-white full-page pictures illustrate historical detail. The story makes a great stepping stone for readers not quite ready for the "Dear America" or "My Name Is America" series (Scholastic).Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Very good book for a young reader. My 7 y/o daughter enjoyed it a lot.

Ordered for homeschooled grandsons.

Easy chapter book for those readers building their skills and their confidence.

Another great book of historical fiction at about a 1st/2nd grade level. Quick read for my 8 year old.

Cant wait to read this with my 3rd grader!

"Cora Frear: A True Story"by Susan E. Goodman(Aladdin Books, 2002)--------------------------------------------This is a great mid-level, historically-oriented chapter book based on the memoir of Cora Frear Hawkins, who lived as a young girl on the American prairie in the last decade of the 1800s... In this story, Cora accompanies her father, a frontier doctor, on a long-distance house call, and they are trapped along with their horse team in the middle of a fast-moving prairie fire. Father and daughter both use cool heads and quick wits to save themselves, and Cora emerges as an excellent role model of a capable, brave young woman. Well-written and suspenseful, a good book for kids who are interested in historical events and pioneer times. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

This is used in Sonlight curriculum. It is a great fit for any US history/pioneer period study. I typically use it with my 1st grade kids, but my older and younger are interested too. Cora is a little girl who helps her dad, a doctor. On the way to a patient in their buggy, they get caught in a prairie fire. Cora is key in saving them, but I'll leave the rest a surprise. What is especially nice is this is based on a true figure in history, and of course female heroines are great as there are not quite so many books written starring a female for kids to admire. It is good for probably 2-3rd grade and above to read alone, or as a read-aloud down to even pre-K age.

Part of SonLight homeschool curriculum. My son enjoyed this and recounted the plot several times with excitement. Asking the comprehension questions showed me this book is a good example how children should trust their parents. Cora's bravery is an inspiration and gave me the opportunity to explain what it really means.

Santa hit it just right with this book! My tractor fanatic son loves this book, and I even learned a little bit about farming while reading it! The book rhymes and the illustrations are great! I definitely recommend for any tractor loving boys!

We saw this book featured on Top Gear as the "fifty shades of grey for men". Great illustrations and catchy story for the young ones.

Had to buy it for my son after seeing Richard Hammond read it on Top Gear. Great book for any small mid or television presenter.

My 3 year old grandson loves this entire series of books! Perfect length as far as reading time, and my son in law says they are very accurate!

My Grandson just turned 3 & he has most of the Tony Mitton series of books. His favorites are Tough Trucks & Dazzling Diggers. He seems a little bored & distracted with this one .... I think he'll like it better when he's a little older.

My son loves this whole series of books. We received 2 for a Christmas gift and have purchased nearly all of the others since. They are thin, paperback books so not appropriate for little ones who will tear pages but my 2 1/2 year old does great with them. I love the rhyming and cute, colorful pictures.

My 2 year old son loves these books and is always wanting to read them again.

Toddler boys love it!

Jon Krakauer is a journalist who received a call from an editor at Outside magazine proposing that he join a guided Everest expedition to write an article about the mushrooming commercialization of the mountain and the attendant controversies. He was supposed to stay at Base Camp, but instead he went to the summit. There were three guides, eight paying clients, and eleven sherpas on his expedition. Rob Hall was the main guide and was a very smart man who knew how to get people up the mountain and down the mountain. Important people on Rob's team were Jon himself, Andy Harris, Doug Hansen, and Mike Groom. Andy Harris and Mike Groom were the other two guides on that particular expedition. At the same time there were Scott Fischer's expedition and the IMAX expedition. The important people on Scott Fischer's expedition were Neil Beidleman, and Antoli Boukreev. Boukreev and Beidleman were the other guides on Scott Fischer's expedition. Scott Fischer was the main guide of his expedition. Scott Fischer was supposed to run the most fun expedition. Rob Hall was supposed to run the safest expedition. Not everybody made it back alive. The title Into Thin Air means both climbing into thin air and vanishing into thin air. I liked the book because I thought it was well written. Jon writes it in such a way that you want to find out if people make it down alive. It is not really a fun book because many people die in it and some people get frostbitten. Many people have enjoyed the book. People who might enjoy this book are adults who like nature stories that involve death and disaster. I'd give the book an eight out of ten because he gave enough information so that someone who didn't know anything about Mt. Everest could read and understand this book. I like how he foreshadows and starts off telling you that a disaster happened, but doesn't spoil the story. He also puts in other people's ideas, even people who are mad at him. I found this book to be sad because of all the people dying, and one person becoming disfigured. I haven't really read any other books that are like this one. If there was anything that could have been improved it was that he didn't tell us how they got to Base Camp from the point where they started climbing. The best things about this book are that he talks about everything that happened and he includes himself and many other people reaching the summit.

Jon Krakauer's suspenseful novel of the tragedy on Mt. Everest in 1996 is fantastic. This gripping novel accurately portrays the events and problems that were experienced on Mt. Everest. I feel this book was a great and fantastic look at what may be one of the most tragic events on Everest. Krakauer's personal experience of the expedition gives the story a first-hand view of what happened and tear-tugging touch. Krakauer's experience with the climbers who survived and those who didn't gives the reader a real sense that these were real people, not just pulled out of somebody's head. In my brief time on this planet, I believe that Into Thin Air is was of the best written non-fiction book that I have ever read. Krakauer gives the story an extra touch of reality by reminding the reader that these people did have families, and that other climbers were also emotionally attached. The story begins when Krakauer reaches the summit of Mt. Everest. From there he takes you all the way back to when the first climbers discovered Everest. He describes past expeditions and climbers who successfully and unsuccessfully climbed Everest. From there he takes you from the beginning of his journey up Everest. From his home in Seattle to reaching the summit, and then the long and tragic journey down the massive mountain. The thing that I liked the most about this book was how Krakauer also gives in depth backgrounds of almost all the climbers on the mountain. Explaining their past climbing experience and their reason(s) for being on Everest. He tells the emotional states of each climber as he sees it, and as other climbers see it as the climb the 29,028 feet to the top of the world. The only thing I found difficult was the extreme vocabulary Krakauer used to describe some normal words. In the end, I found the best way to read this book is with a dictionary by my side.He also tells of the injuries and illnesses that people experienced on Everest. HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema), HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema), frostbite, and other illnesses climbers encountered on the way to the summit. He tells who got it, and how it affected them. Krakauer's story is truly inspiring. It is a great story of heroism, pain, suffering, loss of life, but at the same time human triumph. It shows the rescue efforts and what it felt like, which no other writer could do without being there and experiencing the sorrows, joys, and other emotions felt during the 1996 tragic expeditions. Krakauer delivers a powerful story, full of emotion and facts. He holds nothing back in writing Into Thin Air, he lets the true words people spoke and their true actions tell you what happened not just what he thought. He interviews other climbers about subjects into order to enhance the point he is making. His powerful words and descriptions help to make Into Thin Air as powerful as it is. I strongly recommend this book to everybody. It is a fantastic and accurate book about what happened on Everest. It is powerful and helps to remind you what is really important in life... life itself.
