From Publishers Weekly

She was brought up to be a proper Southern lady, but fate put her in a place where she needed other qualities. At 19, Hallie Crawford left home in Waco, Tex., to teach in a rural school on the Mexican border. Two years later, in 1918, she married Roy Stillwell and moved to his remote cattle ranch in the West Texas Big Bend country. Roy had three cowhands, and the author soon became the fourth. The town-bred young woman became an expert at working cattle on horseback; she learned to manage horses and to protect herself from wild animals (she once shot a mountain lion between the eyes). Now a doughty 94-year-old, Stillwell details the challenges of ranch life, explaining how she and her family, including three children, survived illnesses, drought and the Depression. Her story will strongly appeal to readers interested in the early West. Photos. Copyright 1991 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

YA-- Born in 1879, Stillwell was destined to help tame the last frontier of Texas known as the Big Bend Country. She records this story in some 20 vignettes, beginning with her marriage in 1918. She recounts how she learns to cope with a strong, respectful but often silent husband, the physical demands of a developing ranch, and the strong love that grew to encompass the ranch family. In a simple manner she paints her word pictures, illustrating the indispensable roles of the frontier woman as bride, companion, helpmate, and mother. The photographs of the family interspersed throughout provide a visual picture. This is a readable book that will help YAs develop an appreciation for the demands of such a lifestyle. Here also is a woman worthy of admiration for her determination, sacrifices, and contributions. A wonderful book for American history classes, women's studies, and family history seminars. --Dolores M. Steinhauer, Thomas Jefferson Sci-Tech, Fairfax County, VACopyright 1992 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Living in Texas nearly all my life, I heard of Hallie Stillwell the journalist and newspaperwoman. Reading of her years in the wilds of South Texas gave me a new appreciation of her life. She grew up in an era when few women put on pants and worked like men, but that is what was required once she married and began living on the Stillwell ranch instead of at their house in town. As with other ranchers, she struggled with economic effects of the Depression and years of drought. Illness, physical injuries, and death took their toll as well on her, her family and friends. In each instance, she "gathered" her geese and pushed to make the best of each hardship. Through the years, the ranch hands became like family as did many of the neighbors. She was wise beyond her years in knowing when to keep her mouth shut in situations where the men had the advantage of experience and explained little, expecting her to gain experience from watching them or by observing situations. Ofter her feelings and self-esteem took a hard blow, and she could only separate the wheat from the chaff after she spent time mulling things on her favorite rock out back of the ranch house. No wonder she has always been so highly though of.

I had seen Hallie Stillwell on the 1980s video about the Marfa Lights when my husband and I were doing research for our book, Mysteries of the Marfa Lights Revealed (available on Amazon). In doing the research for the introductory chapters, I'd developed an admiration for the people who opened up the west. There were the men of the Army who WALKED, yes, WALKEd from Fort Stockton to the Big Bend and elsewhere in this region of Texas. And there were the pioneering families who settled this remote area. The Stillwells were among those pioneering families. So when I saw Hallie Stillwell's book, I HAD to read it. Hallie Stillwell's story is as captivating as a novel. I found myself crying when her father and her husband, Roy, died. But most of all my heart was filled with admiration for the woman Hallie Crawford Stillwell was. Her characteristics are those I saw in my maternal grandmother who emigrated from the Ukraine. They are the characteristics of my paternal grandmother who with her children drove from Wisconsin to Montana in a Model T Ford -- alone but with a gun. Hallie Stillwell is a woman with character, strength, and perseverance. She was the epitome of "pick yourself up; dust yourself off; and start all over again." This all comes across in the way she writes of her life. Her style isn't boastful. If anything she's too hard on herself. She tells her story as she saw it -- and how things affected her. It's very personal, very thoughtful, and magnificently written. I wish I'd known Hallie Stillwell!

If you are interested in the way people lived and thrived in the early 1900s, this is a great book. I am a big fan of Big Bend and it was fun to read about those small towns I hold dear.

This book is a delightful look through a window into the recent past pioneer days. Haley Crawford Stillwell gives credence to the saying, "Marry a Texas woman because when the going gets tough, they're tougher." This is a well written, interesting and touching book.

This was a great book...well written...makes one appreciate the hard times these pioneer people had. My gratitude and respect to all of them...

It is a great first hand account of life in the early 1900's on a ranch in far West Texas. An amazing woman and an even amazing woman. A must read for Texans.

A good read (especially if you know the area where she lived) and an accurate account of the days of the 20s, 30s, and 40s as a cowboy's wife. Her matter of fact approach to a really hard life is hard to imagine 100 years later. Hallie didn't have things we certainly take for granted now. No whiners allowed!!

excellent read. Grab the entire series.
