About the Author
Dr. Talithia Williams is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and cohost of the PBS series NOVA Wonders, premiering in April 2018. She develops statistical models that emphasize the spatial and temporal structure of data with environmental applications. Williams received her B.S. in mathematics from Spelman College, master’s degrees in both mathematics from Howard University and statistics from Rice University, and a PhD in statistics from Rice University. Her professional experiences include research appointments at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the National Security Agency (NSA), and NASA. Renowned for her popular TED Talk, "Own Your Body's Data,” she has delivered speeches nationally and internationally on the value of statistics in quantifying personal health information. Dr. Williams has been recognized for the development of a cataract model used to predict the cataract surgical rate for developing countries in Africa. In 2015, she won the Mathematical Association of America’s Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member.

'The Power in Numbers' by Prof. Dr. Williams is an extraordinary book, but at first glance could be considered limited to a few geeks. Mathematicians. Scientists. Women. Girls. Do not think of it this way, however. It is a popular book showing what happens when the human mind is unleashed. Perhaps women mathematicians will be the key to the future of all humans? If so, we should read this book with additional energy.If Emmy Noether and Wang Zhenyi are examples from the past, the future seems unlimited. They have done more than overcome oppression as women. They have explained to us by their lives and science, what we all might accomplish if prejudice or injustice did not divide us.
I really loved reading this book. The author presents short biographies with wonderful photographs and illustrations of women who made math their passion. The book begins with the Pioneers, then includes the code breakers and rocket scientists and ends with Modern Mathematicians. Some of these names will be familiar but many will not. The book is very easy to read and offers a fascinating look at these creative Women. Enjoy
What an amazing addition to the literature! I'm starting a library for my student group focused on gender equity in mathematics and was so happy to see that a book like this exists! Dr. Talithia Williams is one of my heroes and I'm so glad she's sharing her gifts with the world.
Found this in my local SIBL library and fell in LOVE with Math again! All the women from the movie "Hidden Figures" are in here; Mary Ross (Cherokee) is in here and one mathematician who crochets her math projects is in here. Hoping to get several copies to send to the little schools I send school supplies to but I WANT this book for MY library as well. A very inspiring well written book; even the library security guard is trying to get it!
