Wagner Without Fear: Learning to Love--and Even Enjoy--Opera's Most Demanding Genius, by William Berger

From Publishers Weekly

In this dumbed-down guide, Berger, a librettist and composer, attempts to make Richard Wagner's (1813-1883) operas accessible to the uninitiated. After a breezy summary of the composer's life, he devotes a chapter to each of his mature works, interspersing plot outlines with chatty commentary. There is a bit of performance history, as well as advice on how to pronounce names, get through the rough spots at the notoriously long performances and when to eat, drink and visit the restroom. He also touches on Wagner's "pseudo-philosophy," especially his anti-Semitism, but like everything else in this disappointing book, it's all oversimplified. There is little discussion of the music and too much cuteness: on Act 3 of Tristan, for example: "These monologues are ballbusters!" and "They're dropping like flies at Castle Kareol!" Some of the sections entitled "Lobby Talk" are thought-provoking?"Nuremberg as City and Concept" (Meistersinger) and the speculation about the power of a person's name (Lohengrin), for example. Chapters on Wagner CDs and the best books to read on the composer and his operas are useful. For the most part, however, Berger underestimates the reader and trivializes the works. Do we really need to be told that Magdalena, Eva's nurse in Meistersinger, is a "female companion," not a "medical attendant" and that The Flying Dutchman is "supposed to be, like, spooky?" It's easy to be facetious about Wagner, but Berger overdoes it. Author tour. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I'm just getting into Wagner's music having seen The Ring performed twice by the Seattle Opera and a couple of other Wagner Operas. I found this book in the Seattle Opera store, took a look at it and decided to buy it to read it on my Kindle while I was enjoying this years cycle of The Ring.I was not disappointed. I suppose that some individuals take offense to sections that describe when to eat and go to the bathroom and highlight some of the challenging spots to be prepared for when attending a Wagner Opera. But this book wasn't written for the Wagner experts. It was written for the novices and the individuals who want to explore Wagner's Operas in more detail but are, quite frankly, concerned. That is why the book is called "Wagner Without Fear". It helps the novice to get prepared for and enjoy a Wagner Opera. And the book does an excellent job of preparing the newbee to Wagner Operas. This must be a reason why the Seattle Opera has copies of it for sale because that organization does an excellent job of performing Wagner's Ring. And personally, I found the book quite helpful. In November, I'm seeing Parsifal and I'm a little leery but the book provides a good quide for preparation and thanks to the book, I will enjoy that opera, I'm sure.I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Wagner's Operas but has some concerns.

A more then very pleasant discovery, this book. Very good information about Wagner and all his opera's. And written in a very pleasant style with much solid information and humor. Big fat compliments for William Berger for writing a book in which you feel the love for Wagner and Led Zeppelin at the same time, in which Wagner is taken seriously and also with humor, all at the same time. And which brings you information and insights, even if you know already much about Wagner and his opera's.

I was never really much of a Wagner fan, but this book really helped me understand and appreciate Wagner's music dramas. The biographical material is very helpful (Wagner was a genius but not a very nice guy). The plot summaries of his operas are very useful. Berger has a wry sense of humor, and understands that Wagner needs to be taken with a bit of tongue in cheek. It's kind of like Anna Russell, only longer. I find myself referring to this book frequently.

You can either love or hate Wagner, tertium non datur. This book is a real guide how to fall in love with The King of The Opera. And don’t read it if you hate him.I love this book and Wagner, of course!

I've gone to the opera all my life, and this year I'm finally getting around to watching a Ring Cycle. The literature on Wagner is so broad, where to start? I got this book after hearing Will Berger on the RadioLab episode "The Ring and I," and it's better than I expected. The first 60 pages are a biography of what a...umm..."character" Wagner was. Each chapter that follows is a synopsis and analysis of each opera. The writing style is very down-to-earth and even hilarious at times. If you're obsessed with the man, this book will likely fall short and you'll find something to complain about. But if you're looking to learn more about his operas and understand just what it is you're seeing and listening to, this book is your first stop.Highly recommended.

By all accounts Richard Wagner was an antisemtic bigot who practiced the art of adultery, seduction and other nefarious activities in nineteenth century Europe. He was also a musical genius who revolutionized the staid world of opera. William Berger gives the reader a guide written in a popular, witty yet erudite style which enchants as it enterains. Berger provides us with plot summaries of the major Wagner operas while adding chapters dealing with everything from a bibliograpy of valuable books on Wagner; a chapter on Wagner on CD's and even when to plan for bathroom breaks during interminable evenings of Wagner watching in the theatre! I found his description of the ambience at Bayreuth to be a fascinating glimpse of the mecca for all true Wagnerites making the pilgrimage to the shirne of the Master. This book will be a welcome addition to newcomers to the art of Wagner as well as seasoned operagoers. I will keep this book on my shelf for easy access while whiling away Saturday afternoons tuned in to the Met or enjoying an evening of Tristan and Isolde on my Bose radio. Berger is readable and opinionated. This book comes highly recommended by this reviewer.

William Berger has managed to take a rather esoteric opera like Wagner's ring cycle and, like Anna Russell on audio and video, made it comprehensibel for the ordinary viewer. He covers all of Wagner's operas , gives not only a very good and fairly concise plot description, but also tells you how to handle the bathroom breaks---as Wagner operas tend to be lengthy. All in all, a very worthwhile book for anyone even remotely interested in his operas. I am glad it is now available for the Kindle.

This is a delightful as well as useful book. The writing is amusing and entertaining. It doesn't claim to be an exhaustive study of the man and his operas, but there is plenty of information that is organized in a very helpful way. I can't imagine a better introduction to Wagner and his work.
