About the Author
Kim Prothro Williams is an architectural historian with the D.C. Historic Preservation Office. For more than twenty-five years, she has been researching and writing about historic buildings and communities in D.C., Virginia and Maryland, with her primary focus being to evaluate buildings for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Kim is a published author of books, articles and heritage trail brochures dealing with the built environment. Two of her books, Chevy Chase: A Home Suburb for the Nation's Capital and Pride of Place: Rural Residences of Fauquier County, Virginia, address the transformation of the agricultural landscape.

The contents are fine. I am TRULY disappointed with the shoddy construction of the book itself. The book is not bound well... not even remotely. No quality control. Having flipped through it twice, all the pages are now loose. Photo attached.
I have enjoyed internet postings by Kim Prothro Williams for years due mainly to the vivid maps and photographs. Her prose was descriptive and we'll annotated in line.I was disappointed that her book was neither. The pictures fuzzy and maps often unreadable. The only saving grace is that the maps are searchable online and some houses are still standing.I also was disappointed in the value of the hardback book. All in all, it is a good resource but it feels rushed and could have been much better.
It is clear that this book represent years of dedicated effort and research, and presents valuable information for researchers, writers, and general WDC interested readers. Kudos for that. However, upon its very first reading as a new paperback, almost every page fell out, with no particular flexing or mishandling. I found myself reading single pages as I retrieved them.
I was definitely interested when I heard that the National Archives was hosting a book presentation by the author given the subject is one so little covered in the available literature on the history of Washington and the District of Columbia. It was an excellent presentation and the book is even better. Well researched and well presented with a good assortment of photographs of the subject farms and related buildings that dotted the rural (yes, rural) portions of the Federal District for at least half of its history. The book is well foot noted with an almost 7 page bibliography for those interested in diving even deeper into the subject matter. Having been a student of the city’s history for only a few years, I was delighted at how much more I could learn from the author and how many resources she shared for further study. A highly recommended work offering a unique examination of the lesser known aspect of the city’s history.
