Jack Rothman could be my grandson; but reading “Jack of Hearts” by L.C. Rosen, I felt myself a teenager once again. Jack is everything I never was as a teenager – everything I couldn’t possibly have been as a high school student in the early 1970s. Even if you push forward into college, when I came out at twenty, I was still not the boy Jack is in this remarkable novel. I was never that cute or sexy or (most importantly) that self-confident. I realized, as I read, that I was painfully jealous of Jack for being what had been impossible for me.I had to get over all that so I could really appreciate the power and intelligence of this funny, touching, and ultimately empowering novel. And I got over it because of L.C. Rosen’s remarkable skill as a writer, and his ability to give Jack a voice that was simultaneously wise beyond his years and completely teenage.Jack is a joyfully promiscuous (but careful) gay teenager. He knows who he is and is very clear about what he wants and doesn’t want (lots of sex, no commitment). But he is not against the idea of monogamy and boyfriends, he just knows how much work that takes and thinks, at his age, he should just be having fun. Jack’s best gay friend Ben is all about the romantic yearning for “the one” who will be with him for a lifetime – the Prince Charming of his dreams. And Jack’s OK with that. He loves and supports Ben for who he is.There you have the essence of why Jack Rothman is such a fantastic character. This self-described slutty teenager is completely without judgment of other’s choices. When his other best friend Jenna Rodriguez convinces him to write a sex-advice column for her blog, he speaks with a voice of compassion and acceptance that (to be honest) few teenagers could express so articulately. The series of agonized questions and Jack’s thoughtful answers to those questions that are peppered throughout the book create a virtual mini-textbook of smart sexual advice for anyone, not just hormonal teens. However, this is only the plot-skeleton for “Jack of Hearts.” The meat of the plot is the mysterious stalker who begins leaving Jack love-notes on bright pink paper – notes that become increasingly intrusive and sinister as the story unfolds. As these notes, and his mysterious stalker, begin to change Jack’s behavior and his perception of the world, the reader begins to understand how fragile even a strong gay teenager is, and how society’s power to damage kids who don’t conform is always there, like a dark shadow, in the background of even the most privileged children’s lives.I have read lots and lots of gay teen romances, and this is nothing like any of them. There is a fierceness to this story, a carefully controlled anger that sparked lots of memories for me of my own young years. This is a story of how very different 2018 is from 1975; but at the same time how similar the perils of being a young gay man are, even now, even after so much progress in the world.Jack Rothman pushed all my neurotic buttons right away, but by the time I read his first letter for Jenn’s blog, I realized that, if I’d been his classmate, he would have been my best friend in the world.

Jack of Hearts (And Other Parts) is a YA novel by L.C. Rosen. I found this book on the YA new release shelf at my town library. The TLDR version of this review is that I read this book in one day, and I loved it so much that I bought the Kindle edition AND the Audible editions as soon as I finished reading.Jack is an openly gay high school student in Manhattan, and while he enjoys an active social life, it is not nearly as salacious as the rumors swirling around the NYC private school scene. But still, because of his perceived expertise, his friend Jenna persuades him to a sex advice column for her blog based on readers’ questions. Jack is reluctant at first, but finds that he enjoys answering questions.Around the same time, Jack finds a letter from a Secret Admirer in his locker. He doesn’t think much of it, but then he receives a second letter. And then a third. There’s a gradual shift in tone, but it quickly becomes clear that Jack is dealing with a stalker.Jack wants to be his authentic self, spend time with his friends Jenna and Ben, and hook up with cute boys… but the threats in the letters escalate, and somebody is going to get hurt if Jack can’t figure out who has been sending him those notes. One of the reasons that this is such a good book is that Jack is a delightful narrator. He’s confident, and witty, and he’s unapologetic about who he is and what he enjoys. As the story continues, he realizes that his reputation has shaped people’s perceptions about him. And while he doesn’t care about what people think per se, he hates how it affects their response to him.Discussion about sex is frank, but Rosen prefers a “fade-to-black” approach rather than a play-by-play. Jack’s hookups are all consensual and positive encounters, which is the most important factor.I would absolutely recommend Jack of Hearts (And Other Parts). Rosen does a wonderful job with providing a nice balance between gossipy high school romp and taut thriller. The big reveal came as a bit of surprise, but it makes sense if you’re paying attention. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Rosen’s books in the future!

Jack of Hearts and Other Parts was so much more than I expected it to be. I loved everything about Jack, but what I loved most was that he was unapologetic about who he was, though at times my heart broke for him for what he was going through. I haven't been considered "YA" in quite a while, the advice Jack doled out was great and, frankly, which I had when I was younger. I truly hope this book reaches as many teens, but more especially queer teens, whether they are out and proud or still questioning.

This is the book my son would have devoured when he came out five years ago. This is the book he would have looked to for answers to the questions he couldn’t ask at home or at school. He would have loved it. I loved it. It’s crazy- different from any YA book out there and it is so, so needed.

Loved how this YA really went to the edge and got real about sex and everything in between I hope there is more stories like this!... and if there is a film about this movie I recommend Tommy Dorfman from 13 reasons why to play Jack
