I picked up this book to see what the author had to add,and he did not fail me. I had already read 2 of the other books written about El Faro and they gave a lot of detail about the sinking.Roberts'book was much broader,and less filler which is a good thing. I'm re-reading it now,to make sure I didn't miss anything.I didn't like the jolt back to the Marine Electric but I know why he went there. Poor old El Faro should not have been sailing,let alone heading into a hurricane.
I liked the facts presented by the author. It is clear that the author had a angle that he was going for and that came across. Very factual and not dramatized in the least. I would have enjoyed a little more drama and the book might have been a bit more interesting if the author had woven into the story a few more facts about the crew and the storm itself. An interesting read though.
Rather than repeat in complete detail the 26 hours leading up to the sinking, Mr. Frump acknowledges the three previous works that do, and then concentrates on the problems with the "system" that sends unsafe vessels to sea.
Very well written and researched book by a true champion of maritime safety and transparency.
A great read. If you like this you must read Bob's other book: Until the Sea Shall Free Them. A detailed expose of the tragedies caused by a broken system and the courageous people who stood up to fight for reform.
Great story that had to be told. The back story of corprate incompetence covered up by government buracracy is the real stiry that continues to this day.
