Review
“In these stirring pages you will find exquisite descriptions of the work, lovely accounts of the people who do it, and a unique view of farm worker politics, all delivered in straight forward, good humored prose. Most of all, Neuburger reminds us of what it felt like to be young and believe in Revolution.”-Frank Bardacke, author, Trampling Out the Vintage: Cesar Chavez and the Two Souls of the UFW“Does an outstanding, exceptional job of providing the reader with an inside, on-the-ground view of the industrial farm labor experience in California and elsewhere. Bruce Neuburger’s story is compelling and often spell-binding. This is surely one of the most important contributions to the social justice literature exposing farmworker injustice at all levels.”-Dr. Ann López, Executive Director, Center for Farmworker Families; author, The Farmworkers’ Journey“Adds a new and carefully observed chapter to the farm labor saga in Steinbeck country during the Chavez years. . . . It’s the story of Neuburger’s real life in a notoriously hardscrabble labor market, one that seemed like a vestige a generation ago but now serves as the default model in a new era of global neoliberalism. If you’ve ever felt that we’re all ‘casual labor’ now, this is the book for you.”-Peter Richardson, author of A Bomb in Every Issue: How the Short, Unruly Life of Ramparts Magazine Changed America and American Prophet: The Life and Work of Carey McWilliams“An extraordinary book. On one level, it is a political memoir of a young radical’s decade of immersion in the world of farmworkers—their work, their lives, and their struggles for union representation. On another level, Neuburger offers a history of the successes of the Farm Workers Union and its later degeneration. . . . a fascinating story of a young man successfully adapting to an unfamiliar culture.”-Michael Perelman, professor of economics, California State University, Chico; author, The Invisible Handcuffs of Capitalism“In the noble tradition of narratives of protest and witness, this historical work is relevant and timely. It forces us to cast a critical eye on our American democracy, where the rights of countless workers are trampled upon by those with political and economic power.”-Alba Cruz-Hacker, author of No Honey for Wild Beasts

Lettuce Wars - not strictly a book of research, nor fiction, it's a narrative about people we don't normally see - those often far from where the "middle class" or "well-off" live. Agriculture, as we all know, is the source of our food and a critical part of our economy. It is a living organism with big problems, syndromes and diseases and yet it's an abstraction for the majority of people who buy our lettuce, strawberries and other produce in grocery stores. In this book events in the fields evolve through the 60's and 70's with an epilogue that shows us a snapshot of farm workers in recent times. It is a live and personal up-close picture and a page turner where real people live their lives against the backdrop of events that occurred, not only in the fields but across the country. The book's success derives from the fact that the author was a participant in the events described, and gives us a vibrant description of the period and the realities of the struggles. Realistically, and at times with humor the author conveys a substantial analysis of agriculture and immigration, critical issues still today. Don't take my word for it, read the book. You will learn many things that you won't be able to find anywhere else.
This is not your classic, dry book on the history of a period or movement. This is the memoir from inside the everyday life of a movement, a period of time. Strictly factual, but an engaging read that is memoir as much as history. A must read for anyone who wants to get inside the heads of those that lived the Farm Worker movement in the 1960s and early 70s. A deeply compassionate book about the struggle to improve the lot of farm workers who provide our food under extremely rough, exploitative conditions.
This is an excellent book which includes interesting insights and personal experience and reflections.
Reads like a novel. Neuburger puts you in touch with agribusiness from the point of view of the migrant worker. His easy going style masks a fine touch with irony. Finally, his understated tone gives the reader apart to play in the story and makes it fun to read. This is a fresh voice in social commentary.
As promised.
The personal story of the author integrated with his political beliefs was refreshing. The lives and conditions for farmworkers as they fight for a better life was informative and exciting.
What is fantastic about this book is that exposes elements of radical politics and labor solidarity from a social space that is often ignored and overlooked, that is, the agricultural sector of the economy. This book is rich in biographical detail of the complexities of social struggle involved in the processes of how we extract our vital resources, specifically with respect to food, that are necessary to sustain life. The major contribution of this book is that if we are to build a holistic counter-hegemonic leftist front, we need to be holistic in outlook and universal in praxis.
