* The storyline is mixed up. One minute he tells his friend that she looks too tired to stand, and an hour later he gushes about how well she looks.* Sentences are choppy and stilted.* Poor punctuation. Commas in weird places, colons improperly used.Maybe hire an editor or proofreader to iron out some of these mistakes.

This book has a most unusual plot that seems to explode all your senses while reading it! You are indignant, happy, angry, romantic, compassionate, kind, sad, and a host of other emotions...all while engulfed in this tale! The young Lady Elizabeth is both impetuous and outspoken but her kind heart prevails every time. The Duke of Thornwall has a dark past event that he simply cannot get beyond--it has consumed him and is slowly destroying him! The one pleasure left in his life is his precious younger sister, Lady Agatha. When Lady Agatha takes a bad fall from a horse, the Duke rushes into suffocating overprotective mode. Lady Elizabeth comes to nurse her friend but soon finds her friend's brother is in greater need of recovery than his sister! The Duke fights with himself over his feelings for Lady Elizabeth and wonders how she, or anyone, could overlook his obvious scars from the devastating tragedy that imprisoned him in his own mind and castle. Half way through the book, just when you are sure that Lady Elizabeth has pulled the Duke from his dark place, a secondary, very sinister background plot is revealed! The evil is so conniving and dastardly that you want to jump into the plot and beat the evil villain to a bloody pulp yourself! He is so inhumane and evil! Much grief drives both the Duke and the villain but love prevails. Will it prevail before Lady Elizabeth is forced to marry another by her well-meaning parents? Will her parental selection be able to love and cherish her as she desires? Will the Duke of Thornwall ever get past his grief or his lost love to invite the love of another? Just as one is assured all will end well, another similar tragedy happens, but this time it is Lady Elizabeth who is in danger of losing her life. Will her parents' selected Duke run to the rescue? Will the Duke of Thornwall once again be the hero?My one regret with the book was not ever finding out what happened to the very loyal Phoebe who is Lady Elizabeth's maid. The reader is never told if Phoebe survives the final tragedy.

I received this book free from the author as part of the ARC team. This is my honest and voluntary review.I found the story line of this book to be well worth reading. It was different from most of books on the subject matter. The main characters drew me in immediately. I enjoyed their interactions right from the start. I thought the subject matter was tastefully done, including the behavior of the antagonist. I don't want to give anything away about the book, so I'm being careful! I hate spoilers. One of my favorite characters was a woman named Ursula. No matter what was going on around her, she was the voice of calm reason. She said things in her very wise & straight forward way that touched me.Ladies Agatha & Elizabeth both seem to be such loving spirits, just don't expect to see either back down, if they see something that they believe is wrong. Malcolm, the Duke, was definitely a wounded soul &my heart bled for him.I loved the fact that this is a sweet and clean book. Ms. Finch's writing does not need gratuitous sex scenes within its pages, to make it a great book. I know that I am going to enjoy the books this author writes & she hasn't let me down yet. I also like the fact that I was unable to stop reading, once I started...even when a rather large package was delivered to my door! I highly recommend this book & all of Ms. Finch's books to any reader who enjoys Regency Era Romance.

What can I say? I loved this book. It is written in a way that is heartfelt and loving. It is a story of enemies to friends to love. The lead female character Lady Elizabeth (Lizzie) Owens and she is a wonderful character. She is the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Winterset. She is honest, down-to-earth, free thinking, spirited, kind, thoughtful, caring and loving. The lead male character is Malcolm Hickson, Duke of Thornwall. He is a stern, irritable man locked in the past. He blames himself for the death of his fiancé four years ago. She died in a fire trying to help those who may have been trapped in the house. Malcolm has never forgiven himself for not saving her and up to this day mourns her passing. Lady Agatha is Malcolm's sister. She got thrown from a horse and broke her arm. Agatha wrote to Lizzie and asked her to come visit. Lizzie decided to go and stay with Agatha until she completely recovered. When she arrived, she got into a quarrel with a man who was talking to her driver. It turns out that he was Agatha's brother, the Duke, Malcolm. Well, Malcolm did not take kindly to Lizzie's pushy and brash behavior and almost sent her away. But Lizzie demanded to see Agatha. Agatha was thrilled to see Lizzie and Malcolm resigned himself to her presence. Malcolm and Lizzie kept bumping heads. Then they decided to start anew and their relationship blossomed. But fate threw a cruel blow to Malcolm and LIzzie. Malcolm's past came to haunt him and caused him to re-evaluate his relationship with Lizzie. Lizzie's parents were pushing her towards the future they have planned for her. Lizzie and Malcolm were separated. Malcolm missed Lizzie and Lizzie missed Malcolm. But neither of them did anything to further their acquaintance. Then the unthinkable happens and Malcolm feels he is reliving his past. This is a wonderful story of loyalty, friendship, regret, misery and love. I totally enjoyed reading this and I highly recommend it. Do not forget to read the extended epilogue it continues the story six years later.

The basic storyline could have had potential had it not been for the lack of proofreading. Along with feeling the story was too drawn out, the errors made it hard for me to enjoy the book. I pushed myself to read it all but at times I just wanted to skip read it.
